A Beginning Overview Of Affiliate Marketing

Although forms of affiliate marketing existed before, it has evolved into a system of marketing for the Internet. There are three main players in each system. They are the company or retailer; the associate or affiliate; and the visitor or customer. The retailer pays its affiliate a percentage of sales generated from his website. Normally, the retailer furnishes a banner the associate places on his site. The ad, promoting the company or retailer, features a link to the company site, and visitors are redirected there when they click the ad. Then, if they buy something, the affiliate receives a commission.

Affiliate marketing is not an advertising method in and of itself. Traffic must be lured to the affiliate site if he is to earn any commissions. To do this, other types of Internet marketing must be employed, such as search engines and emails. Articles complimentary to the company’s products or services are also sometimes used to attract new customers.

Certain industries tend to use affiliate plans more than others. Gambling sites and online retailers are the most common types, followed closely by mobile phone providers and travel sites. Those providing Internet related products or services, such as web hosting or software for websites, are also becoming more prone to use affiliates.

Compensation methods vary a great deal, but most will fall in one of the most popular three categories. By far the vast majority use a plan that pays a percentage on the sale amount. The cost per action plan pays a set rate whenever the visitor performs a certain action, which can be whatever the company wishes. It can be a purchase or perhaps signing up for opt-in emails. These first two methods account for ninety-nine percent of the plans. The rest use a variety of methods, but the most popular of the remaining ones pays affiliates if their visitors will just click on the ad.

Since affiliates only earn a commission if the retailer is able to make a sale, there are two things to consider when choosing a company to promote. First, the company should offer a professional website that will make it enticing for the customer to make a purchase. This means the site should be well maintained and easy to navigate, along with offering competitive pricing and service. Second, it is most beneficial to match the visitors referred to a site with products that might interest them. Therefore, a company should be selected that offers what the typical visitor to the affiliate site would want.

Multiple tiers are becoming more popular for commission structures. This bears some similarity to multilevel marketing. As an example, if an affiliate leads another to become an affiliate of the company, the first affiliate will receive a payment based on the sales of the second as well as his own.

Some affiliates drive visitors to a website where they can choose from a variety of offers. Normally, an email is sent advising the visitor to go to a website in order to receive a prize. Once there, a number of companies will present their offers, and if the visitor agrees to a set number of them, he becomes eligible for a drawing.

No millionaires have been created overnight by affiliate marketing, but it is a significant source of income for a large number of sites. Sometimes, affiliates will even create a web presence solely for the purpose of posting ads for their retailers. They can be an excellent method of generating additional revenue provided an affiliate can match a company site to his or her own.
